Amongst the most memorable are the celebrated Trelissick Gardens, with exotic flowers grown alongside more traditional plants.

Other exceptional gardens both in and around Truro include the Trewithen Gardens, which feature an attractive parkland setting, and also the nearby Probus Gardens, known for their horticultural prowess and lectures. Here are the main parks and gardens in the Truro area of Cornwall.

Based around a grand Georgian house, the Trewithen Gardens has a strong and rather beautiful woodland feel and charm. Many quality plants are propagated onsite, before being planted around the gardens. Reputed to be amongst the finest garden of its kind in the whole of the country, the Trewithen Gardens are a must-see attraction for visitors staying in the Truro area and feature many level pathways, a tearoom serving a range of refreshments, and also a nursery area selling plants.

The magnificent Trelissick Gardens are managed by the National Trust and feature an outstanding collection of subtropical plants, all of which thrive in this mild Cornish climate. Standing alongside Truro's Fal estuary, this spreading estate features many riverside walks and woodland trails, with a central garden always full of colour and flowers, whatever the time of year, including camellias, azaleas and large magnolia trees. Although the 18th-century house here does not open to the public, the gardens more than make up for this and are far more impressive.

The Probus Gardens are full of horticultural interest and over the course of the year, many planting trials take place around the grounds. Various lectures and talks are also available and the gardens are particularly fragrant during the summer months, when many of the exotic plants are at their absolute best. Home to more than 6,000 different plants, the Probus Gardens feature many themed areas with stylish planting schemes.

Located close to the city centre, Truro's charming Victoria Gardens stand next to the River Kenwyn. Originally laid out to celebrate the diamond jubilee of famous royal, Queen Victoria, the gardens feature a bandstand where many summer concerts take place, together with seating areas, water features, and many brightly coloured flowers and bedding plants.

Covering around 2 acres / 0.8 hectares, the Bosvigo Gardens may be fairly small, but they are crammed with plants and interest, designed to peak during the summer months. Divided into many separate themed garden areas, the Bosvigo Gardens surround a charming Georgian House, which is not open to the public, and are situated extremely close to central Truro. Highlights here include the Walled Garden, the ornate Victorian Conservatory, the Hot Garden, the 'Vean' Garden, the Woodland Walk, the Azalea dell, various courtyards and the owners' specialist plant nursery.

Truro Parks and Gardens: Tregothnan Estate and Botanic Gardens - Truro, Cornwall, TR2 4AN, England, UK

Covering approximately 100 acres / 40 hectares, the gardens at the Tregothnan Estate are the biggest of its kind in the whole of Cornwall. The Boscawen family have lived here since the beginning of the 14th century and although the gardens are not open to members of the public on a daily basis, guided tours are available when arranged in advance. The tours take you on a journey around the gardens most interesting features, which include the productive tea gardens, much of the botanic gardens and the summer house, where a cream tea awaits.
